Sparring without protection

Sunday 9:00

This demonstration addresses issues about overprotecting or underprotecting oneself during "sparring" situations. Depending on the approach, the context of the bout (competition, didactic work, research, fun?) has consequences both on the risk of injury and the learning curve for specific skillsets. We will demonstrate our experience of a "different" way of fencing (working project).

Workshops

Close Quarter Fighting

Saturday 10:00 - 12:00

The aim of this workshop is to explore unarmed combat for survival. We will be looking at the principles that come into account and see how these can be applied in a fight. The focus will be on adapting to one's opponent and different situations using techniques from a selection of historical combat manuals (mainly Talhoffer, Codex Wallerstein and Fiore).

Samuel Embleton

Zornhau

Saturday 10:00 - 12:00

We will work with the Zornhau from the "von Danzig" ms. We will improve our Zornhau and work through the Zornhau techniques.

Richard Harvey

Fiore's Dagger

Saturday 13:00 - 15:00

The workshop offers a brief introduction to the complete system (Guards, Footwork, Attacks, Defenses, Intentions) and a more detailed look at the first and third masters of Fiore, which are unarmed defenses against inside and outside attacks with a dagger and form the basis of much of the system. While specific techniques are shown and taught it is meant more as a starting point into Fiore's dagger.

Equipment: bring masks, daggers will be provided

Darko Zürcher

Drills zum Versetzen, Fühlen und Winden am langen Schwert

Saturday 13:00 - 15:00

Kolja Klein & Manuel Trachsel

The Cologne Fechtbuch and its proper way of moving

Saturday 15:15 - 16:30

The workshop is about a martial interpretation of the three-tempo movements in pieces of the Kölner Fechtbuch such as the Flogel and also on the question of the right and left (manuscript interpretation).

Equipment: bring masks and gloves

Merlin Babel & Baptiste Mesot

Sparring as a game and teaching tool

Saturday 15:15 - 17:15

This workshop will propose a number of various exercises for sparring situation for the regular training and sharing experiences about those. On the one hand, the objective is "pushing" your trainees to spar in a safe and friendly environment with a ludic dimension (would depend on the level of equipment, number and experience of trainees and so on). On the other hand, it is about pointing out the didactic potential of some exercises if correctly and regularly practised during training sessions.

Material: Mandatory: longsword simulator (steel, plastic, wood) or other weapon simulator if you find a pair to work with; fencing mask, gloves, chest protection. Recommended: the same+throat, back-head, elbow, knee protectors (with good gloves and fencing jacket).

Daniel Jaquet

HEMA and Choreography

Sunday 9:00 - 11:00

The HEMA & Choreography workshop will include : Warm-up; Demonstration on how to include historical moves in artistic fencing, and how to break free from them; Some explanation on how artistic fencing differs from HEMA, and how to mix the two efficiently; Work in pairs to create a little show fight with historical techniques; Present it to the rest of the group.

Equipment: any weapon (just be sure you have/find a partner with the same weapon type)

Yasmine Dufour Mayor & Yolan Affolter

Ringen

Sunday 14:00 - 16:00

In this workshop, we shall take exercises from non-dagger HEMA systems (flow drills, points exercises etc...) and use them to promote basic skills useful in Ringen. Our workshop is not mainly about set-piece techniques, but developing the skills needed to apply them.

Samuel Gassmann & Ulisse Gianinazzi

Sword and Buckler

Sunday 14:00 - 16:00

This is a basic course in the sword-and-buckler system of MS I.33, our oldest Fechtbuch. I will present an overview of the stances and attacks with suggestions for incorporating sword-and-buckler fighting in your club's regular training schedule. I will assume basic longsword skill, but no prior knowledge of I.33 tactics or terminology.

Equipment: bring your own buckler and one-hand sword simulator if possible.
